The Danville Fire Department responded to a structure fire call at 120 Old Piney Forest Road, Lot 79 on March 2nd at 2:50 AM. Engine 2 arrived and found smoke throughout the inside of the mobile home. The occupant advised the smoke alarm woke him up. He stated he could see fire around the floor duct of the furnace. Fire personnel crawled under the trailer and found the floor on fire around the furnace. The power was disconnected and the unit was removed. The fire was then completely extinguished. Smoke was removed from inside the trailer.
The occupant will not be able to stay in his home for at least a day. The heating unit was removed and there is also a small hole in his floor from the fire. There was no damage to his personal belongings. He is a military veteran and advised he could stay at his American Legion post overnight. The smoke alarm that woke the occupant had been installed by the DFD. The alarm may have saved his life and his trailer because of the location of the fire. We remind everyone that all residences should have working smoke alarms. Alarms should be tested once a month. With Daylight Savings Time starting next weekend, batteries should be replaced in the alarms. If you need a smoke alarm installed in the city, please call 799-5226 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. There is no cost for the alarm or the installation.
The Danville Fire Department responded with three engines, one ladder, one safety officer, and one chief officer. We were assisted by Danville Utilities, Danville Police, and the Danville Life Saving Crew. All units remained on scene for a little over one hour.
