[ARCHIVED] Danville Fire Department has busy day on the Dan River

The Danville Fire Department responded 7:35 AM to a report of a person in danger of falling in the river from the Main Street Bridge.  Upon arrival, crews encountered a woman sitting on the ledge on the outside of the  bridge. The Fire Department placed crews in the water.  One crew was in a boat and another crews had swam into place down river to provide rescue.  The Police Department negotiators worked with the victim to convince her to try and self-rescue by climbing back over the railing.  While doing so, the victim was trying pull herself up and she was then dangling by her arms.  The Danville Police department and one member of the Fire Department and personnel from the Danville Life Saving Crew were able to hold on to her.  A member of Danville Power and Light had a harness with him.  He went over the railing, grabbed the victim, and tied a rope around her.  He and the victim were then pulled to safety.  The victim was then turned over to the Danville Life Saving Crew for treatment.

The second call was for a victim in the river from an overturned kayak at approximately 2:15 pm.  Upon arrival, crews found a man on debris that was underneath the Norfolk Southern train trestle.  After surveying the options for a river rescue, Fire Department personnel decided the best option was a high angle rescue from the top of the train trestle.  Norfolk Southern was notified and all rail traffic was stopped.  Fire Department personnel rigged rope rescue lines on the train trestle.  One rescuer was lowered to the victim.  He placed a harness on the victim and the victim was pulled to safety.  Fire Department personnel assisted the Danville Lifesaving Crew in a rescue boat downstream as a safety precaution.  No injuries were reported from the victim or emergency personnel.

The Danville Fire Department responded with 3 engines, 1 ladder truck, one safety officer, and 2 chief officers to both incidents.  Danville Lifesaving Crew and Danville Police Department responded to both incidents as well.                                                                                                                            water rescue             Battalion Chief, F.D.
