Ronald W. Hazelwood passed this afternoon at the University of North Carolinian Burn Center from injuries sustained in a fire Thursday morning May 26, 2021.
The Danville Fire Department arrived at 49 Fairfield Avenue on Thursday morning to find fire and smoke showing from the front window of the house. A second alarm was initiated due the report of someone being trapped in the house.
Neighbors from the community advised that there were possibly one or two people inside on the arrival of fire personnel. Search and rescue operations were immediately started as well as fire attack. The victim was located and removed from the structure, while emergency medical care began as soon as he was out of the fire area.
The victim was transported by Danville Life Saving Crew to SOVAH (Danville) and later transported to UNC Chapel Hill for continued treatment where he died from his injuries.
The Danville Fire Department responded with four engines, one ladder truck, one Safety Officer, two Command Units and two Fire Marshals. Also, Danville Police Officers, Danville Life Saving Crew Units, Danville Power, Light, Water, and Gas Departments were on scene for assistance.
The fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshals Office.
