[ARCHIVED] Riverwalk Trail Mural Highlighting "Dan River Twins" Book to Start on July 22

The Dan River Twins

Danville Parks and Recreation, along with Danville Riverview Rotary, are excited to announce the commencement of a new mural at Woodall Chevrolet that is visible along the Riverwalk Trail. Starting Monday, July 22, artist Carla Garrison-Mattos will begin the project that is anticipated to take 10-12 days to complete.

The mural is inspired by the children’s book “The Dan River Twins,” a project by Danville Parks and Recreation. The plot of the book follows the story of Danny and Mist, two otters who call the Dan River home. The exciting tale details the otters competing in the Otter Frolics games in and along the banks of the Dan River.

The project was spearheaded by former Danville Riverview Rotary president, James Turner. “This mural is meant to promote awareness, education, and appreciation of the Dan River,” Turner said. “Danville Riverview Rotary’s efforts are focused on bringing projects to life that the community finds interesting and enjoyable. This mural is sure to encourage residents to get out on the trail and see its beauty in person.”

This type of art piece was recommended by the recently completed Public Arts and Culture Master Plan, which aims to enhance Danville’s artistic identity and create a path towards the City becoming a regional destination for arts and culture. The plan will be presented to City Council on August 20.

City Manager, Ken Larking, expressed his appreciation of Woodall Chevrolet for allowing the use of the building to serve as a platform for art along the trail and is thankful to the Danville Riverview Rotary club members who are volunteering their time to the project. “The Riverwalk Trail is one of Danville’s most important amenities,” Larking said. “The mural will bring even more enjoyment to the many people who walk that section.”

The project also showcases how placemaking on trails transforms ordinary pathways into vibrant community landmarks, fostering a sense of community identity and pride.

“By integrating public art, trails become more than just routes for walking or cycling,” Bill Sgrinia, Director of Danville Parks and Recreation said. “They evolve into cultural destinations that celebrate art and creativity, encourage community engagement, and strengthen community bonds.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Riverwalk Trail to witness the creation of the mural, however, they should take note that there may be congestion at this location.

Those wishing to read “The Dan River Twins” may do so by checking the book out at the Ruby B. Archie Public Library or by reading online at danrivertwins.com.
