[ARCHIVED] WINTER STORM UPDATE: All Danville Transit servies operating

UPDATE AT 7:00 A.M. WEDNESDAY: All Danville Transit services are operating today, including Reserve A Ride. Buses that travel fixed routes are using snow routes.

Public Works crews plowed primary roads throughout the night, but they remain wet and may be slippery due to the moisture and low temperatures.

Crews plowed primary roads throughout the night. "It was a fine light snow all night," said Public Works Director Rick Drazenovich. "This storm was difficult to maintain primaries because of the powdery light snow constantly falling. We would work a primary and then have to go back and work it again. The low temperatures also made the salt we put down less effective."

Drazenovich said crews will begin plowing secondary and residential roads this morning. "I am not sure how well it will push if it gets compacted with early morning traffic. These roads will remain somewhat snow covered until temperatures get above freezing."

UPDATE AT 4:15 P.M. TUESDAY: Danville Transit is now operating on snow routes due to the snowfall received today.

UPDATE AT NOON TUESDAY: Danville Parks and Recreation programs scheduled after 5 p.m. today have been canceled due to inclement weather. The cancellations include all basketball games and practices.

The After School Kids program will remain open as scheduled, parents need to pick up their children by 6 p.m. from Coates Recreation Center. If Danville Public Schools are closed Wednesday, then students enrolled in the After School Program can attend Winter Fun Day at Coates Recreation Center.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Danville Public Works Department is prepping main thoroughfares, industrial parks and emergency areas such as Danville Regional Medical Center. The latest forecast from the National Weather Service indicates Danville can expect snowfall with an accumulation of one to three inches.

Although light snow and flurries already are developing, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect from noon today through 9 a.m. Wednesday. This winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.

The forecast calls for a daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch. An overnight accumulation of an additional one to two inches is possible, ending early in the morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The high today will reach 24 degrees.

Public Works crews spread brine, which is a mixture of water and salt, on roadways. The water in the brine evaporates, leaving the salt behind on the road. The salt breaks the bond between the snow and the roadway, and it therefore helps prevent the snow from freezing onto roads and bridges.

Crews are prepared for a full work shift tonight. If the city receives the accumulation of snow as forecasts indicate, residents are reminded that snow removal is accomplished on a priority basis. The top priority is main thoroughfares and collector streets leading to various emergency facilities. Second priorities are roadways that connect to primary routes and bus routes.
