Danville Parks and Recreation has organized a biscuit breakfast Tuesday morning at Dan Daniel Memorial Park for the more than 650 motorcyclists participating in the American Legion Legacy Run.
The public is invited to greet the riders at the park, but Parks and Recreation officials urge those planning to do so to arrive at the park before 8:30 a.m., at which time the Legion Riders will arrive under a police escort.
In addition to Parks and Recreation, the breakfast sponsors are Biscuitville, Bobby Carlsen Photography, Piedmont Aerie #4420 Fraternal Order of Eagles, Pilot Flying J and Sam’s Club.
The ninth annual American Legion Legacy Run begins Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Legion’s national headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. Legion Riders will leave Indianapolis that morning and then travel through Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina before arriving Aug. 21 in Charlotte, N.C., the site of the national convention in Charlotte.
Along the way, riders will raise money for The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund, which provides college scholarships to the children of U.S. military personnel killed on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
Rob Phelps, Virginia 6th District American Legion Commander, in Danville, and the area director of American Legion Riders, said $764,000 was raised during last year’s Legacy Run, and more than $5 million has been raised since 2006.
Danville is included on this year’s Legacy Run route. Riders will arrive in Danville at about 5:30 p.m. Monday, riding south on U.S. 29 to the Franklin Turnpike exit, then over to North Main Street, ending at American Legion Post 325 on American Legion Boulevard.
Riders will have dinner at Post 325. At 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, the riders will assemble at the Holiday Inn Express on Riverside Drive for a ride to Dan Daniel Memorial Park under police escort to visit the Danville/Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial, enjoy the biscuit breakfast and take a group photograph.
