This fall, Danville Parks and Recreation is providing a way for citizens to give back to their community; just by playing with cardboard.
The Second Annual Cardboard Challenge will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Carrington Pavilion during the Children’s Festival.
Open to all schools, community groups, civic organizations, athletic clubs, booster clubs and creative individuals, the Cardboard Challenge, sponsored by Danville Parks and Recreation, Intertape Polymer Group Mattress Firm, Noblis and Clement and Wheatley, offers the opportunity to win money for local charities serving the needs of Danville/Pittsylvania County provided they are a recognized 501 (c)3 and are registered with the event.
Inspired by the story of Caine Monroy, a child who spent his summer building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store, the Imagination Foundation created the Global Cardboard Challenge to celebrate child creativity and to recognize the role communities can play in fostering said creativity.
Categories for judging include Best in Show, Most Creative, Most Functional, Tallest, Fan Favorite, Best River Theme, Best Elementary School Project, Best Secondary School Project and Best Day of Project.
Applications are now being accepted for Cardboard Challenge participants as well as non-profit organizations. For more information, visit www.PlayDanvilleVA.com or contact Danville Welcome Center at 434-793-4636.
