Danville City Manager Joe King announced today the appointment of Michael L. Adkins as the city’s finance director.
In that capacity, Adkins will be responsible for financial oversight of the city, the employee retirement system and the Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility Authority. He also will manage the finance staff, and he will direct and coordinate accounting collections, real estate assessment, purchasing, print shop, budget and internal auditing operations.
Adkins joined the city on May 9, 2005, as the city’s assistant finance director. He has served as interim finance director since Barbara Dameron left three months ago to assume the position of finance director for the city of Roanoke.
Danville conducted a national search and interviewed Adkins and four other finalists last week.
“Michael has provided leadership in bringing many innovative improvements to Danville’s Finance Department over the past decade,” King said. “He is a great addition to our senior management team.”
Adkins holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in business administration from Averett University. He is a licensed certified public accountant.
A Danville area native, he has more than 20 years of accounting experience with the city, Piedmont Glass, Danville Regional Medical Center and Dimon.
