With fall just around the corner, Danville Parks and Recreation is reminding everyone to get out and get active and what better way than getting ready for one of the many racing events throughout the community.
The Dirty Dan on Oct. 3, presented by Danville Regional Medical Center and Danville Parks and Recreation, is one nasty 3.8-mile run over the river and through the woods; just don’t expect to end up at your grandmother’s house. This year’s annual mud run will feature an all-new course with new obstacles.
Registration ends Sept. 30. The race will start at 3 p.m. Group discounts are available to groups of 5 or more and groups of 10 or more. Visit www.DirtyDanDash.com or call 434-799-5150.
For those looking for adventures in the dark, sign up for the Glow with the Flow 5K on Oct. 16. Voted “Rising Star of 2013” by North Carolina Festivals and Events, this annual night-time 5K, presented by Danville Regional Medical Center, highlights Danville’s River District and celebrates Danville’s movement in running toward a brighter future.
Run or walk with your pet or stroller. The event will begin and finish at The Brick on Main Street. The race will start at 7:15 p.m. in front of The Brick on Main Street. Be sure to hang around for the after party and hit the River District Festival the next day. Visit www.PlayDanvilleVA.com or call 434-799-5150.
Not a runner? Check out the River Ride cycling event on Oct. 17 benefitting the Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity. The event features courses for all levels beginning at a less-than-10-miler and topping out at the 100-mile ride on and along the Riverwalk trail.
Kids age 12 and under ride free. The race will run from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Stick around for the finish line party. Visit www.riverride.eventbrite.com for more information or to register.
If a 5K or a 100-mile bike ride aren’t a big enough challenge, sign up for the Danville Half Marathon presented by URW Community Federal Credit Union. The run will be held Oct. 17 at 8 a.m. and will feature a beautiful route along the Dan River beginning and ending in the River District.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. After the race, stay around for the River District Festival. Visit www.danvillerunner.org.
To wrap up some great fall running events, the Danville Family YMCA will host its 29th Annual Danville Family YMCA Family Fun Run and 5K on Nov. 7 in honor of Louie Fields. Pancake breakfast will be served after the race. Call (434) 792-0621 for more information or visit www.DanvilleFamilyYMCA.com.
This year’s course will be on the Riverwalk Trail.
Also on Nov. 7 is a brand new event; the Anglers Ridge 26.2 and 50K Trail Run. Test your endurance and run the ridge. Finishers will receive a jacket and will have completed the longest foot race on the famed single-track trails to date.
Awards for the top three male/female overall and top three age group winners. Visit www.PlayDanvilleVA.com to register.
All of these events and more can be found on “Events in the Community” calendar on www.PlayDanvilleVa.com.
