The City of Danville on Friday joined the owners and staff of River District Barbershop to cut the ribbon to its new facility in the River District.
River District Barbershop is an upscale barbershop located at 136 South Ridge St. It has six chairs staffed with highly skilled professionals that can cater to all hair types and will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Mayor Sherman Saunders thanked the barbershop’s proprietor Von Wellington for investing in the River District. Wellington is a local photographer and filmmaker.
“A man who has captured the growth and development of this River District from behind his camera lens is now investing in a business venture,” Saunders said. “Von Wellington has decided to reimagine this former retail building into a place that will house several new business concepts, the first being the River District Barbershop. To Mr. Wellington and staff, we would like to thank you for investing in the River District, and we wish you many, many years of success.”
Wellington is involved in a number of ventures in the Dan River region, including Von Wellington Photography, Wellington Film Group and Well Works Visual Arts, Inc., a program designed to educate youth about the visual arts.
Wellington’s award-winning photography of local businesses and special events are on display inside the shop.
“Inside, you see that the walls are decorated with all my friends and photos of local business owners, and that is what I dedicate this barbershop to,” Wellington said. “Thank you for your support.”
Corrie Teague, assistant director of the Danville Office of Economic Development, said River District Barbershop is breathing new life into a vacant retail space.
“The energy this business will bring to South Ridge Street will surely generate more interest and foot traffic to this area of the River District,” Teague said. “We would like to thank Von for his continued dedication to the Dan River region.”
