[ARCHIVED] City reinstalls ‘Last Confederate Capitol’ marker

Last Confederate Capitol historical marker

A City of Danville public works department crew Monday morning reinstalled the state historical marker “Last Confederate Capitol” at its location on Main Street outside the historic home of Major William T. Sutherlin.

The marker was removed on March 4 for restoration, which was approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. The agency manages the state historical marker program.

The marker was erected in 1939. It commemorates the use of Sutherlin’s home by Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who resided at Sutherlin’s home from April 3-10, 1865. In the house, Davis held the last full cabinet meeting of his presidency and authored his last official proclamation as president of the Confederacy.

Today, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History is located in the home, which is at 975 Main St.
