ORIGINAL STORY POSTED ON THURSDAY: City Council will meet Tuesday, April 19, in a business session at 7 p.m., followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.
The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.
The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.
During next week’s business session, Mayor Sherman Saunders will issue a proclamation declaring the month of May as “Make Danville Shine” month. The goal of the “Make Danville Shine” campaign is to encourage every citizen to focus on maintenance, upkeep and beautification of their property and to assist neighbors who may not be able to do so due to age or disability.
To provide expertise in home improvement and lawn care, the city will hold the second annual “Make Danville Shine Home Expo” on Saturday, May 7, at the Community Market on Craghead Street.
The mayor also will present two awards from the Government Finance Officers Association. One award will be presented to Finance Director Michael Adkins for excellence in financial reporting. The second award will be presented to Cynthia Thomasson, director of budget, and Amanda Paez, assistant to the city manager, for distinguished budget presentation.
For the budget award, Thomasson and Paez had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. The guidelines are designed to assess how well a budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communication device.
In addition to the proclamation and presentations, City Council has a vote scheduled on a grant of $31,033 from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. City Council must decide whether to accept the grant. The grant would be used to provide planning, organization, equipment, training and exercise needs of the Fire Department’s hazardous materials team. No local matching funds are required.
For the work session, City Council will review monthly financial statements and and a proposed resolution to convey a house at 344 Ross St. to the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The home is located in the Westmoreland target revitalization area. The housing authority handles real estate transactions for the program.
River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming at RiverCityTV.org or the city's YouTube channel – DanvilleVaGov.
River City TV does not air work sessions, but they are open to the public.
