The Danville Planning Commission voted Monday to recommend approval of a rezoning request that would allow a new project in the River District to move forward. The project would create 23 market-rate apartments at 549 High St.
Last summer, Winston-Salem Rehab Development joined Washington-based Level 2 Development to develop the property as the “River District Lofts.” Yesterday, the Planning Commission recommended approval of a rezoning request to clear the way.
The city has demolished a collapsed building nearby. That space will become an interior courtyard and 25 parking spaces for residents of River District Lofts.
Community Development officials hope this will spur more rehabilitation in the Spring, High and Floyd street sections of the River District.
Both firms have been involved in a number of projects in Danville over the past seven years. Those include the Ferrell Historic Lofts, Lynn Street Lofts, Westmoreland Schoolfield Senior Apartments, Pemberton Lofts, and The Continental.
City Council will vote on the rezoning request next month.
