Celebrate America’s Independence with a full day of activities and events hosted by Danville Parks and Recreation.
The festivities will begin at 8 a.m. with the Danville Regional Medical Center Patriot Challenge Trail Run at Anglers Park. Afterward, the Annual All-American Pie Baking Contest will be at 2 p.m. at the Pepsi Building followed by July 4th at the Crossing Celebration at 6 p.m. and fireworks at dusk. Danville Regional Medical Center Patriot Challenge, 8 a.m., Anglers Park (350 Northside Drive)
Featuring a 5K, 10K and Children’s Run, the trail run is a great way to kick off the holiday. An ice cream social will follow. Register online at www.PlayDanvilleVA.com by June 30. The cost is $25; $35 on race day (cash only). The first 75 who register will receive a Patriot Challenge beach towel. The kid’s fun run costs $5. Call (434) 793-4636.

All-American Pie Baking Contest, 2 p.m., Pepsi Building (661 Craghead Street)
Nothing says the Fourth of July like a homemade pie. You can turn your favorite pie into an award winner whether it’s an apple pie or chocolate cream. Winners will be announced at the Pavilion Main Stage. The overall grand prize winner will receive a $150 gift certificate to Golden Leaf Bistro. Additional prizes will be given for first, second and third in each category.

July 4 at the Crossing, 6 p.m., Carrington Pavilion (661 Craghead Street)
The annual celebration will feature free entertainment, arts and crafts and Captain Jim’s Magical Illusion Show. Food concessions and amusement rides will be available. Admission is Free.
The Transit Vocal Band will headline the entertainment section of the evening. With a diverse repertoire of music from every decade since the 1950s, Transit, a five-member a cappella group, is sure to please any audience. Combining soaring leads, smooth harmonies and a thumping rhythm section, Transit demonstrates the power, versatility and emotion of the most natural instrument of all; the human voice.
