Danville Police has launched a "hot cars kill" campaign to remind citizens not to leave loved ones in potentially deadly temperatures.
The campaign opens as the city experiences one of the hottest weeks this summer. Police say they hope if people see just how hot it can get in a car, they'll think twice.
"A couple of years ago, unfortunately, we had a couple of major incidents where some small children were left in cars,” Danville Police Cpl. Tim Scearce said. “Those did result in some charges and some permanent and fatal injuries. We don't want that to happen."
Pets also are at risk when left in cars.
Scearce said temperatures inside cars rise quickly. In demonstrations this week, temperatures reached 160 degrees.
The car will move to a different location in the city each week this summer.
