City Council voted Tuesday night to request that the Virginia Department of Transportation allocate $1.5 million for various street improvement projects. The projects are:
• drainage and sidewalk improvements on North Union Street between Spring Street and Memorial Drive.
• concrete base removal on Riverside Drive.
• removal of the sharp curve on Airport Drive.
• adding a third westbound lane on a portion of South Boston Road.
The breakdown in funding would be $500,000 for the North Union Street project, $500,000 for the Riverside Drive, $300,000 for South Boston Road and $200,000 for Airport Drive.
The funding would come from VDOT’s revenue sharing program. VDOT requested cities and counties to submit applications for fiscal year 2018, which would begin July 1, 2017. Any money allocated to a city or county must be matched with local funds.
In addition to seeking funding for the street improvement projects, City Council voted to amend the City’s budget to provide for receipt of an $86,999 grant from the Department of Juvenile Justice for the W.W. Moore Jr. Detention Home.
City Council also voted to reappoint T. Neal Morris and Russell Reynolds as members of the Industrial Development Authority.
Council's meeting included a business session followed by a work session. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings. In Tuesday’s work session, City Council reviewed a space needs study conducted for city government buildings.
