[ARCHIVED] Unofficial results reported in City Council election

All three incumbents who sought re-election to City Council won another four-year term, with the fourth seat going to former two-term councilman Adam Tomer, according to unofficial election results reported Tuesday.

The incumbents were the James Buckner, Vice Mayor Alzonzo Jones and Dr. Gary Miller.

Jones led the field, with an unofficial tally of 3,811 votes. He was followed by Tomer with 3,318; Miller, 3,302; and Buckner, 2,992.

There were five candidates for the four seats, with Sheila Baynes garnering 2,910 votes. Mayor John Gilstrap did not seek re-election.

For the winning candidates, their four-year term begins July 1, at which time they will join the Rev. Larry Campbell Jr., Sherman Saunders, Fred Shanks, Lee Vogler and Madison Whittle, all of whom have two years remaining on their four-year term.

City Council is the governing body of the City of Danville. It is comprised of nine people, elected at large for four-year staggered terms. The City Council elects the mayor and vice mayor from its membership. These officials serve two-year terms.

Seven candidates ran for the three Danville School Board seats. Crystal Averett Cobbs led the field, with an unofficial tally of 2,604 votes. She was followed by TyQuan Graves with 2,480 votes and Brandon Atkins with 2,307 votes.

Incumbent Philip Campbell was fourth, with 2,159 votes. The other candidates were Michelle Cahill (1,661 votes), Joyce Glaise (1,290 votes) and Shawn Giggetts (792).

Cobbs, Graves and Atkins will join Terri Hall, Jeffrey Hubbard, Ed Polhamus and Renee Hughes on the school board. Graves, 20, is the youngest Danville School Board member ever.
