Danville on Sunday received its highest one-day snowfall in 22 years, according to official records from the National Weather Service.

A total of 12.5 inches of snow was measured at Danville Regional Airport on Sunday. Snow began falling around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning and continued through the day and into the evening before ending around 7 p.m., when the precipitation turned to a mix of sleet, freezing rain and rain.

The snow total is the most in one day since Jan. 7, 1996, and it ranks as the third highest one-day total from records for Danville dating to 1945.

Here are the Top 10 highest one-day snowfall totals for Danville:

  • 16.3 inches — March 13, 1993
  • 14.2 inches — Jan. 7, 1996
  • 12.5 inches — Dec. 9, 2018
  • 11.3 inches — Feb. 15, 1958
  • 11.0 inches — Feb. 10, 1948
  • 10.0 inches — Feb. 13, 1960
  • 9.2 inches — Feb. 1, 1948
  • 8.8 inches — Jan. 17, 2018
  • 7.8 inches — Jan. 7, 2017
  • 7.8 inches — Jan. 22, 2016

Mostly cloudy skies are forecast for the remainder of today, with sunny skies on Tuesday and Wednesday. High temperatures will be in the upper 30s to low 40s today through Wednesday and will result in considerable snowmelt. However, the National Weather Service warns that any remaining water on streets, sidewalks and parking lots will refreeze overnight. Temperatures for each of the next three nights are forecast to fall into the low 20s.

Motorists are urged to continue to use caution overnight and for the Tuesday morning commute to work. A surface that looks wet may actually be ice.

For City of Danville services and programs, here is the latest situation report as of noon:

  • Public Works crews continue to plow snow on residential streets. Residential streets that have been plowed are mostly clear, with some slush. Crews will continue to plow through the day and overnight. We estimate that crews will complete plowing on residential streets on Tuesday by late afternoon to early evening. The streets that have been plowed have a large snow windrow, which is the pile of snow left at curbs and driveways after the snowplow has cleared the street.
  • The major streets are mostly clear, but turn lanes, medians and bridges have slush, so motorists should slow down and proceed with caution.
  • The Police Department reports 15 weather-related calls from 9 p.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. today. Of the 15 calls, eight were for disabled vehicles, three for downed trees, three for hazardous road conditions and one motor vehicle accident. There were no injuries.
  • Danville Utilities reports about 900 customers remain without power. These outages are scattered throughout the service territory. We are seeing many individual outages of one to 10 customers affected in an area, with the outages likely caused by fallen trees on power lines and tree limbs on power lines.
  • The Municipal Building reopened to the public at noon.
  • The Charles H. Harris Financial Center also reopened to the public at noon. The available staff at the office today can answer questions and handle phone calls, but cannot take utility and tax payments.
  • All Parks and Recreation programs scheduled for today remain canceled.
  • All Parks and Recreation facilities, including both library buildings, remain closed.
  • The James F. Ingram Justice Center (courthouse) remains closed.
  • Danville Transit is not operating today.
  • Danville Regional Airport remains closed.
  • Household trash pickup is taking place today as scheduled.
  • Any citizen in need of shelter should call the non-emergency number for the Emergency Communications Center. That number is (434) 799-5111, option 8. The center will arrange to meet the need.
