City Council will meet Tuesday, Sept. 17, in a business session at 7 p.m., followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.
The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.
The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.
River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.
During the business session, the City Council is scheduled to vote on the street improvement projects that will be submitted to the Virginia Department of Transportation for funding. The projects are as follows:
- Pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Piney Forest Road.
- Pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersection of South Main Street and Stokes Street.
- Reconstruction of the westbound lanes of Riverside Drive from Arnett Boulevard to Audubon Drive.
- Roadway and pedestrian infrastructure improvements along a section of Memorial Drive and Craghead Street to support the future Riverfront Park and development of the White Mill property.
These applications, which are due Oct. 1, are requesting half of the estimated project costs.
City Council also is scheduled to vote on applications for state funds for two sidewalk construction projects. One project would build sidewalks on Kemper Road from South Main Street to Edmonds Street. The second project would build a sidewalk on Audubon Drive from Apollo Avenue to Woodview Drive.
These applications are due Oct. 1 and are requesting 80 percent of the estimated project costs.
First readings will be held on the appropriation of state allocations for 10 street improvement projects already approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board and the Virginia Department of Transportation. The allocations total nearly $2.8 million.
A first reading is an introductory step required by City code. This step serves to provide public notice of pending action. The earliest vote that can take place will be the Oct. 1 City Council meeting.
Several other matters are on the agenda for the business session. Votes are scheduled on:
- A resolution to authorize the city manager to execute an agreement to allow the City of Danville to serve the Southern Virginia Mega Park at Berry Hill with water and sewer service.
- Appointment of Anu Upadhyaya to the Danville Community Policy & Management Team.
- A budget amendment to provide for grant funds for senior transportation services.
- A budget amendment to provide for grant funds for Comprehensive Services Act services for at-risk children and families.
- A budget amendment to provide for proceeds anticipated from the issuance of general obligation bonds. Earlier this month, City Council voted to authorize bond financing for $8 million in electric system projects and nearly $5 million for various school, public works, parks and recreation and fire projects. Also, the bond financing would refinance two previously issued bonds.
During the work session, the City Council will review the latest financial reports and consider appointments to board and commissions.
