Danville Transit’s Mainline Trolley bus service, which previously operated from April through December, will not be renewed this year. The Transportation Advisory Committee voted to terminate the service due to low ridership activity.
The service debuted in August 2017 with a trolley bus traveling on weekends along a historic route path used by trolley cars during the 19th century and linking the Old West End, River District and Neapolis.
The service later was expanded to incorporate Riverside Drive and Trade Street and provide a door-to-door service option that allowed the trolley bus to go off route to board and disembark passengers within one-quarter of a mile of the course.
The trolley buses will continue to be used as spares for the city bus system’s fixed-route service, and for large groups going to weddings, festivals and other events.
