The Danville Circuit Court has issued a writ of election declaring a special election in the city for Nov. 3 to fill the unexpired term of Adam Tomer on City Council.
Under § 24.2-226 of the Code of Virginia, the circuit court is charged with setting the special election date when a vacancy occurs in any local elected office. The City Council petitioned for the special election.
The court issued the order on Tuesday, July 14. The full writ of election is available here.
Tomer announced in late May that he was resigning his seat effective June 30, saying in a statement that he has accepted a job elsewhere that will not allow him “the time or ability to serve the citizens of Danville.”
Tomer was initially elected to City Council in 2006, and his current term was slated to end on June 30, 2022.
Last week, the City Council appointed former mayor Sam Kushner to fill the seat on an interim basis.
