The City Council will meet on Tuesday, June 1, in a business session at 7 p.m. followed by a work session. Both sessions will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.
River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and RiverStreet Networks channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.
The City Council is scheduled to vote on several matters:
- A resolution initiating a referendum on a 1 percent sales tax increase for school construction.
- A request for a special use permit for residential and commercial uses permitted by right at 424 Memorial Drive, which is the site of the White Mill project announced in early May. A public hearing will precede the vote.
- A proposed amendment to the Zoning Ordinance to allow the city manager, planning director or their designees to initiate zoning ordinance amendments.
- Fourteen appointments to various boards and commissions, including the Airport Commission, Danville Development Council, Utility Commission, Social Services Advisory Board and Transportation Advisory Board.
Also during the business session, the City Council will hold first readings on appropriation of $740,000 in state funds for the Riverfront Park project and appropriation of $29.14 million in federal American Rescue Plan funds. A first reading is an introductory step required by City Code. City Council will vote on these matters later in June.
Mayor Alonzo Jones is scheduled to issue proclamations for Business Appreciation Week (June 7-11) and LGBTQ Pride Month.
The work session also will be held in Council Chambers but will not be televised. In work sessions, the Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.
During the work session, the City Council will review proposed changes to the City’s personnel system.
In addition, the City Council will hold a closed meeting as allowed by state law to discuss a prospective business or industry related to economic development and to discuss the acquisition of real property or disposition of publicly held real property.
Details on the agendas for both the business and work sessions are available online.
