The Police Department on Monday, Sept. 12, gathered at the corner of Sycamore and Spruce streets for a community engagement walk. The focus of the monthly community engagement walks is to build public trust and develop positive relationships between officers and community members.
During a walk, the Police Department goes into a neighborhood to meet and greet residents. The department gathers information about concerns in the neighborhood, such as, for example, if there is littering in the area, a property nuisance, etc. Police will actively listen to citizens' issues and be problem solvers within the community.
For this walk, police officers dressed in casual clothing, walked the neighborhood, and talked with citizens who were already outside their homes instead of the normal door knocking.
Last year, Police Chief Scott Booth determined September community engagement walks will be in honor of Norma Brower, who worked as a housing development specialist for the City of Danville prior to her death.
