[ARCHIVED] Change your clocks, check your batteries

Daylight Saving Time - fall back 2023

With daylight saving time coming to an end at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 5, the Fire Department recommends that residents take the time to check their smoke detectors at home to ensure they are functioning properly.

Here are the steps to check your smoke alarms:

  • Gather Supplies: Ensure you have a fresh set of batteries on hand, a flashlight and a ladder if needed.
  • Test Each Alarm: Go to each smoke alarm in your home and press the “test” button. This will trigger the alarm to sound briefly, typically a few seconds. Ensure that the alarm sounds loudly and clearly. If it doesn’t, replace the batteries immediately.
  • Replace Batteries: If any of the alarms emit a weak or no sound during the testing, replace the batteries with fresh ones. Use the appropriate battery type specified in the alarm’s manual or on the alarm itself. Consider using long-lasting lithium batteries, which will not need as frequent changing.
  • Check for Damage: Examine the smoke alarms for any visible damage, such as cracks or discoloration. If you notice any signs of damage, replace the smoke alarm.
  • Review the Smoke Alarm Manual: Refer to the user manual for your alarms to ensure you are following the manufacturer’s recommendations for testing and maintenance.
  • Date Labels: Check the date labels on your smoke alarms. If your alarms are older than the recommended replacement date, consider replacing them with newer models.
  • Regular Testing: Set a reminder to test your smoke alarms at least once a month to ensure they continue to function properly.
  • Emergency Escape Plan: While conducting these checks, it’s an excellent opportunity to review and update your family’s emergency escape plan. Ensure everyone knows the designated meeting place and escape routes in case of a fire.

Regularly testing and maintenance of your smoke alarms is a simple yet essential task to protect your home and loved ones. Fire safety should be a year-round priority. For more information on smoke alarm upkeep, click on this link.

Remember, with the end of daylight saving time at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, don’t forget to set your clock back one hour.
