Mayor Alonzo Jones and other local leaders joined Parks and Recreation staff today at a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the Third Avenue Splash Pad at Third Avenue Park.
The splash pad is officially open to the public following the ribbon cutting under the following dates and hours:
- Memorial Day to Labor Day (Subject to change)
- Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Friday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Admission to the splash pad is free.
"It brings me immense joy to see projects like this come to completion," Jones said at the ceremony. "The splash pad represents more than just a new facility; it is a testament to our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents. It’s a place where children can play, families can gather, and friends can meet, fostering a sense of community that is at the heart of our city."
"I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to Danville Parks and Recreation staff, the Site Collaborative design team, and the dedicated community members who made this project possible," said Bill Sgrinia, Director of Danville Parks and Recreation.
Third Avenue Park holds a special place in the City's history as one of the first parks and recreation centers established in Danville. The original wading-splash pool, built in the 1960s for just $300, set the precedent for the splash pad Danville is now able to enjoy today.
Looking ahead, Danville Parks and Recreation has several upcoming park enhancements:
- Doyle Thomas Park: A splash pad is expected to open at this location later this summer.
- Westmoreland Park: A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the end of June to celebrate its opening.
- Ballou Park: A splash pad is expected to open by Memorial Day 2025 at this location.
- Riverfront Park: Expected to open by the end of this year, further expanding Danville’s premium green spaces.
These developments reflect Danville Parks and Recreation’s ongoing commitment to enhancing parks and facilities and providing residents with safe, enjoyable spaces to gather and play. Each new addition aims to honor the history of Danville’s parks and facilities while looking forward to a vibrant future for the community.
