[ARCHIVED] Casino generates $20.28 million in May

The Virginia Lottery recently reported that gaming revenue totaled $20.28 million for Danville Casino in May. The total was slightly higher than the amount generated in April and ranks as the third highest month since the temporary casino opened.

Gaming tax revenue for the City of Danville in May amounted to $1.2 million. The City of Danville also receives direct payments as part of an agreement with Caesars Virginia. The direct payment for May will be $507,086, bringing the month’s total revenue to $1.72 million.

The temporary casino opened on May 15, 2023. Since then, it has generated $242.18 million in gaming revenue and $14.5 million in gaming tax revenue for the city. Direct payments total about $6 million.

The Virginia Lottery also released May figures for the state’s other two casinos in operation. HR Bristol casino generated $15.46 million in gaming revenue, with Rivers Casino Portsmouth bringing in $26.99 million.

The Danville casino has 824 slots and 36 table games in operation, according to the latest Virginia Lottery report. The casino in Bristol has 891 slots and 29 tables games. The casino in Portsmouth has 1,411 slots and 83 table games.

During May, gaming revenues from Virginia casinos totaled $62.74 million. Virginia law assesses a graduated tax on a casino’s AGR, or wagers minus winnings, and $11.29 million in taxes were paid. Of that total, $3.76 million goes to Danville, Bristol, and Portsmouth as host cities, with the remainder going into the state’s gaming proceeds fund, a problem gambling treatment and support fund, and a family and children’s trust fund.

Danville’s voters approved a Caesars Virginia casino in Danville by a wide margin in November 2020. The Virginia Lottery Board approved the casino license for Caesars Virginia in April 2023. The permanent Caesars Virginia casino resort project in Schoolfield is expected to be completed in late December of this year.

The Virginia Lottery Board approved the casino license for HR Bristol in April 2022, and the temporary facility on the site of the former Bristol Mall opened to the public on July 8, 2022. The permanent site remains under construction. The Virginia Lottery Board approved the casino license for Rivers Casino Portsmouth in November 2022 and the casino opened to the public on Jan. 23, 2023.
