City Council incumbents Larry Campbell, Barry Mayo, Sherman Saunders, Lee Vogler and Madison Whittle won re-election Tuesday, according to unofficial results.
Vogler led the field, with an unofficial tally of 8,980 votes. He was followed by Whittle with 8,791; Campbell, 8,097; Saunders, 7,484; and Mayo, 7,481.
There were nine candidates for the five seats, with Shakeva Frazier garnering 6,614 votes; Petrina Carter, 5,959; Maureen Belko, 3,732; and Felice McWilliams, 3,288.
For the winning candidates, their four-year term begins Jan 1, at which time they will join Mayor Alonzo Jones, James Buckner, Bryant Hood, and Vice Mayor Dr. Gary Miller, all of whom have two years remaining on their four-year term.
The City Council is the governing body of the City of Danville. It is comprised of nine people, elected at large for four-year staggered terms. The City Council elects the mayor and vice mayor from its membership. The mayor and vice mayor serve two-year terms.
Vogler will be serving his fourth term. He was first elected to the City Council in 2012, becoming the youngest person ever elected to that position, at age 24.
Whittle will be serving his third term. He was elected to the City Council in 2016.
Campbell will be serving his fifth term. He was first elected to the City Council in May 2008.
Saunders first served on the City Council from 1996 to 2000. He was appointed to the City Council in 2001 to fill the unexpired term of Council Member Daniel W. Marshall, and has served every year since then.
Mayo will be serving his second term. He was elected to the City Council in 2020.
Results are incomplete because provisional ballots will not be counted until Wednesday, Nov. 13. Also, mail-in absentee ballots postmarked on or before Nov. 5 may be accepted until noon on Friday, Nov. 8.
