The City Council will hold its inaugural meeting at noon on Thursday, Jan. 2. The organizational meeting is held every two years for the oaths of office of winners from the most recent City Council election, election of a mayor and vice mayor, and issuance of seat assignments for each Council meeting.
The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building.
Larry Campbell, Barry Mayo, Sherman Saunders, Lee Vogler and Madison Whittle won re-election in November. Following their oaths of office, the City Council elects the mayor and vice mayor from among its members to serve a two-year term. Alonzo Jones is currently serving as mayor, a position he has held since July 1, 2018. Dr. Gary Miller is the vice mayor, and he has served in that position since July 2020.
Following the selection of mayor and vice mayor, seating positions for every council member except the mayor will be determined by a random drawing. Council members must maintain the positions assigned for each meeting until the next inaugural meeting in two years.
Council members serve four-year, staggered terms. The other members of the Council are Jones, Miller, James Buckner and Bryant Hood.
River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the inaugural meeting. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and RiverStreet Networks channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.
