The Danville Office of Economic Development & Tourism (DOEDT) announced that construction has begun at the Danville Visitor Center, 645 River Park Drive, Danville, with expected completion in August 2025.
The improvements are designed to enhance the tourist experience and increase awareness of the many attractions and resources in Danville and Pittsylvania County. Despite the construction, the Visitor Center will remain open at regular hours, 9:00am-5:00pm, Sunday-Saturday.
One major improvement is the redesigned layout of the space, with a centralized reception desk, ensuring a prominent travel counselor presence. The upgrade will also feature new technology, including a sound dome to experience tourism assets throughout the region.
“In 2023, the state of Virginia announced that short-term visitation increased in our region by over 49%,” states DOEDT Tourism Manager, Lisa Meriwether. “Given these rising figures, it is crucial that we provide an updated and well-equipped space to accommodate the growing influx of visitors exploring Danville and Pittsylvania County.”
Improvements also include a training room, updated storage space for resources and inventory, including Danville and Visit SoSi branded merchandise and collateral, and an expanded patio.
The City of Danville has partnered with two local companies, Quality Construction and Dewberry, on the project.
“These renovations highlight Danville and Pittsylvania County’s increasing appeal as a travel destination,” says DOEDT Director, Corrie Bobe. “The Visitor Center will serve as a central hub, linking guests and residents with the many attractions and points of interest our region offers.”
The Danville Visitor Center is managed by Lisa Greer, alongside a team of six part-time travel counselors. The DOEDT assumed operators of the Visitor Center in July of 2022.
