The Danville Police Department would like to remind the public about the dangers of “celebratory gunfire” this New Year’s eve. The discharging of a firearm in celebration of the New Year in the city of Danville is dangerous and illegal.
Discharging a firearm recklessly and illegally into the air can result in injury and property damage when the projectile returns to the earth.
Danville City Code 40-3(b) prohibits the discharge of firearms within the city limits: “It shall be unlawful and a Class 1 misdemeanor for any person, without necessity, to fire or discharge within the City or any of its parks any cannon, pistol or other firearm of any kind, except that a person may fire or discharge an appropriate firearm on a firing range approved by the Chief of Police as being in compliance with said standards.”
If the result of illegally discharging a firearm into the air causes personal injury or death, more serious felony charges can occur such as aggravated assault and even homicide.
Enjoy your celebration of the New Year, but please remember: don’t drink and drive and don’t engage in celebratory gunfire!
The Danville Police Department would like to wish everyone a happy and safe New Year!
