The Danville Police Department would like to remind everyone of the continued focused efforts to combat opioid abuse in the City of Danville, provide information on recent likely deaths from opioid use, and offer assistance to individuals fighting opioid addiction.
The Danville Police Department began partnering with Danville-Pittsylvania County Community Services along with community health and safety partners in late 2019 to address opioid addiction in Danville.
The focus on reporting and tracking has shown a total of 44 victims of non-fatal overdoses reported and a total of six suspected heroin-related overdoses that resulted in death through December 4, 2020. Three of those deaths believed to be from the use of heroin have occurred in the last seven days.
The Danville Police Department issued Naloxone to officers in May of 2020. Officers have successfully deployed Naloxone six times in life-saving overdose situations and continue efforts to save the lives of those fighting addiction.
The three recent deaths serve as a reminder of the seriousness of opioid addiction. The Danville Police Department will offer assistance and referrals for help to any community member suffering from opioid addiction in its ongoing efforts to save lives.
Anyone suffering from addiction and seeking assistance can ask for help from any officer, go to SOVAH emergency room, or contact Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services 24 hours a day at 434-793-4922.
