Danville Police arrested 32-year-old Jaivon Alonzo Scott following a shooting at 3316 Riverside Drive.
Police responded to a 911 call for a shooting at 2:25 p.m. inside American Freight, Furniture, Mattress and Appliance.
The officers rapidly responded to the scene and spotted Scott running from the area. Officers chased him on foot and took him into custody nearby and recovered a small caliber handgun.
The victim was a 29-year-old store manager who sustained a single gunshot wound to his head. First responders transported him to the hospital. Investigators visited the victim later this afternoon at the hospital and at the time of this release he was alert and in stable condition.
The information we have currently is that Scott, a Danville resident, was a store employee and at work when he shot the manager and then left the store. Other employees were in the store, but no one else was injured.
We recognize the shock an incident like this can have on a community. Officers went to each business in that shopping center this afternoon to let the employees and customers know the scene was safe and provide them with as much information as we had available at the time.
While this is a tragic event, we are thankful for the witnesses who provided good information; dispatchers who quickly got that information out; and our officers who arrested Scott without hurting him or letting anyone else get hurt.
Investigators charged Scott with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm in an occupied building, shooting a firearm a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a felon. We will release a booking photo when it becomes available.
