What do I have to do to qualify to buy a house under the City's program?: You must meet HUD's income eligibility guidelines detailed below. Additionally, you must qualify for a loan through a conventional lender. Finally, you must complete the eight hour home counseling course through the Center for Housing Education.

Community Development Housing

1. What do I have to do to qualify to buy a house under the City's program?: You must meet HUD's income eligibility guidelines detailed below. Additionally, you must qualify for a loan through a conventional lender. Finally, you must complete the eight hour home counseling course through the Center for Housing Education.

2. I want to receive Section 8 assistance with my rental payment.: The Section 8 program is administered by the Danville Redevelopment & Housing Authority (DRHA). They can be contacted at (434) 793-1222.

3. What can CDBG funds be used for?: Types of projects/activities generally eligible for funding include: acquisition, rehabilitation, development of public improvements, facilities and housing; public services (limited to 15% of entitlement amount); restoration of historic properties; removal of materials and architectural barriers that restrict mobility or accessibility; special economic development activities; planning and administration; and other community development projects.

5. Are there any agencies in Pittsylvania County that might assist me with housing rehabilitation and/or purchase?: Contact Telamon at 1-800-656-1501 for housing purchase or Pittsylvania County Community Action Agency at (434) 432-8250 for rehabilitation assistance. Also, Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity may be able to assist you. They can be contacted at (434) 793-3630. In addition, the Southern Area Agency on Aging (SAAA) may be able to assist you if you are elderly. They can be contacted at 1-800-468-4571.

6. I hear I can buy investment properties at a cheap price through City tax sales, City condemned properties or City foreclosure sales. Where can I find a list of these properties?: City tax sales and foreclosures only occur a few times a year at best. Properties are auctioned to the highest bidder. The City takes in the money that is owed and gives any extra money received to the property owner. Such sales are advertised in the legal section of the newspaper. There are no lists available. Condemned properties belong to the property owners and not the City. You should contact the owner to inquire about purchasing the property.
