1. Is refuse (trash) collected on holidays?

Refuse collectors work all holidays except two: Thanksgiving and Christmas. On these two holidays, refuse is collected on the following Saturday.

3. How do I discard an appliance?

Appliances are picked up by appointment only. There is a $15 fee for each appliance not containing refrigerants and $40 for each appliance capable of containing refrigerants. The fee can be added to your utility bill or paid by cash or check. To schedule a pick-up, call (434) 799-5245.

6. What time should I set out my refuse (trash) for collection?

Refuse should be set out by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection or the evening prior to your pickup day.

7. Is there a limit on the amount of refuse (trash) that can be collected?

Yes. The amount of household refuse is limited to the amount of waste produced within the residential premises. Each full container cannot exceed 50 pounds, including the container.

8. What are the limitations for yard waste?

The volume is limited to 2 1/2 cubic yards per collection. Yard waste must not be longer than four feet, 12 inches in diameter, nor weigh more than 50 pounds per bag, box, or bundle. Do not mix yard waste with trash, junk or other debris. The city will not collect contractor debris.

9. Does the City collect loose grass?

No. Loose grass must be bagged.

10. How do I dispose of paint cans?

Public Works cannot collect liquid which may leak out of the garbage truck. Paint cans should be left open until any paint dries up or soak up any paint left in cans with cat litter or some other absorbent. The paint can then can be placed at the curb on your collection day with regular refuse.

11. What about household hazardous waste?

Household hazardous waste can be picked up on an as-needed basis. Place in cardboard box or bag and call the Public Works Department at (434) 799-5245 between 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. We will sort and dispose of waste.

13. Who should I contact if a sewer backup occurs in my house?

First, contact a plumber. If the problem cannot be resolved, contact the Public Works Department at (434) 799-5245 during working hours (Mon.-Fri., 8am-5pm) or (434) 799-5284 after working hours.
